Hail damage roof insurance claim guide after 2.5-inch hail hit Converse & Kirby Sept 11: ACV vs RCV, the deductible law, what the payout buys. RoofDirectSA.com
SAN ANTONIO, TX, UNITED STATES, October 1, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ — Hail damage roof insurance claims are being filed across northeast San Antonio after the September 11, 2026 storm. The National Weather Service logged hail up to 2.5 inches in Converse, 1 to 1.5 inches near Kirby, and a 60 mph gust at Randolph Air Force Base, between Universal City and Schertz. Roof Direct San Antonio, which has used the same installation crew since 2009, has been inspecting roofs in the storm’s path since the morning after.
Roof Direct San Antonio (RoofDirectSA.com), a locally owned roof replacement company, is publishing this guide for homeowners whose adjuster is about to visit, or already has: what a hail claim pays, what the payout can buy, and the one rule about deductibles that Texas law settles.
“Every roof we’ve inspected in Converse and Kirby since September 11 was pummeled by hail, and every one of them needs a full replacement,” said Daniel Cabrera, founder of Roof Direct San Antonio. “A repair on a roof like that is a patch on a roof that’s already failed.”
What should Converse and Kirby homeowners do after hail damages the roof?
Photograph the roof, the gutters and any dented vents from the ground, note the date, and call your insurer to open the claim. Your policy sets the filing deadline. The Texas Department of Insurance says some policies give one year from the date of damage unless you can show good cause for a delay.
Get the roof documented before the adjuster arrives. The company offers a free hail damage roof inspection and a written damage report with photos of every slope, vent and flashing, yours to send with the claim. What hail damage looks like on a shingle is on Hail Damage Roof Replacement in San Antonio.
“We prepare the damage documentation and we’re on site when your adjuster inspects the roof. You stay in control of your claim,” Cabrera said. “We’re roofers, not public adjusters.”
Does insurance cover roof replacement after hail damage?
A standard Texas homeowners policy covers hail damage, and the adjuster’s inspection decides whether the roof is repaired or replaced. Wind and hail deductibles are often 1% to 2% of dwelling coverage, so a $250,000 home at 1% carries a $2,500 deductible.
The declarations page shows the exact deductible. A hail claim by itself cannot be used to raise your rate or drop you: Texas Insurance Code §551.107 excludes losses from natural causes from the claim counts that allow a surcharge or a non-renewal.
What is the difference between ACV and RCV on a hail roof claim?
RCV pays the current cost to replace the roof minus your deductible, usually in two checks: the first minus depreciation, and the second, called recoverable depreciation, after the roof is installed and the invoice is sent in. ACV pays the depreciated value minus your deductible in one check, and the gap is yours to fund.
It works like a car claim. ACV on a seven-year-old car pays what the car is worth today, not what you paid for it. RCV pays the going rate to replace that car at today’s prices. On a roof, RCV pays today’s rate for a new roof, and ACV pays that rate minus the years of wear. Both subtract your deductible. The declarations page names which policy you have. The second check, the supplement process and the warranty are explained step by step at Roof Insurance Claim in San Antonio.
Can I get a better shingle on a hail insurance claim in Texas?
The claim pays to replace the roof you had, and you choose the roofer and the shingle. With Roof Direct San Antonio, on most claims a 3-tab roof comes back as Owens Corning Duration for the approved amount, and a roof with architectural shingles can often step up to Duration STORM, a Class 4 impact-resistant shingle.
Joshua H., on San Antonio’s far West Side, had his April 2025 hail claim approved by Allstate at $14,040, written for 3-tab shingles. He paid his deductible, and insurance covered the rest.
“Your adjuster’s estimate pays to replace the roof you had. There are no sales commissions or billboard budgets in our price, so on most claims that same amount upgrades you to Owens Corning Duration, a Class 3 shingle, in place of 3-tab,” Cabrera said. “Joshua’s claim was written for 3-tab at $14,040. He got Duration for that amount, and the other roofers he called wanted about $5,000 more for the same upgrade.”
Duration is rated Class 3 under the UL 2218 impact standard and Duration STORM is Class 4, the highest rating. Both carry a wind warranty up to 160 mph with the full Owens Corning system. Class 3 and Class 4 shingles can both qualify for annual homeowner insurance premium discounts. Texas requires insurers to offer one (TDI bulletin B-0024-98), and it grows with the class.
Can a roofer waive my deductible in Texas?
No. Texas Insurance Code §707.002 requires you to pay it, §707.004 lets your insurer hold back the replacement-cost payment until you show proof of payment, and Business and Commerce Code §27.02 makes waiving or absorbing it a Class B misdemeanor for the roofer.
A roofer who offers to eat the deductible has to make that money up somewhere, usually by padding the invoice to your insurer. The company never waives or absorbs a deductible, and its invoice names the exact shingle installed. Homeowners who need time on the deductible can finance it through Synchrony.
How do I tell a local roofer from a crew that came for the storm?
Ask for a San Antonio address, the City of San Antonio contractor registration number, a certificate of liability insurance, and a written workmanship warranty with the company’s name on it. Roof Direct San Antonio is registered with the city as HIC-26-00245 and is an Owens Corning Preferred Contractor.
“After a hailstorm, out-of-state crews come to San Antonio, roof for two months and leave. I own Roof Direct San Antonio. I’m on the job before the crew gets there in the morning, I’m the last one to leave, and I personally oversee every roof replacement,” Cabrera said. “The same crew has installed our roofs since 2009, and the phone number on your invoice will still be mine ten years from now.”
Roof Direct San Antonio roofs carry a 10-year workmanship warranty backed by Owens Corning through its Preferred Protection program, plus the limited lifetime shingle warranty. Owens Corning registers that workmanship coverage only for its Preferred Contractors.
The storm’s 60 mph gust was measured at Randolph Air Force Base, on Schertz’s doorstep. Schertz homeowners can enter an address at Roof Replacement Schertz TX and see their replacement price in under two minutes.
Roof Direct San Antonio serves homeowners across the San Antonio metropolitan area including Stone Oak, Alamo Heights, Helotes, Boerne, New Braunfels, Schertz, Cibolo, Seguin, Converse, Live Oak, Bulverde, and Shavano Park.
