Pekas Smith Clarifies Which Medical Conditions Qualify for Disability Benefits Under the SSA Blue Book
PHOENIX, AZ. A common misconception among applicants is that certain diagnoses automatically guarantee approval for Social Security Disability benefits. The Social Security Administration (SSA) maintains an extensive Listing of Impairments, commonly referred to as the Blue Book. But qualifying under a listing requires very specific medical findings, not simply a diagnosis. Pekas Smith, an Arizona disability law firm, has published guidance on which conditions qualify for disability under the Blue Book and what evidence the SSA requires.
The Blue Book is organized into 14 adult body system categories: musculoskeletal disorders, special senses and speech, respiratory disorders, cardiovascular system, digestive system, genitourinary disorders, hematological disorders, skin disorders, endocrine disorders, congenital disorders, neurological disorders, mental disorders, malignant neoplastic diseases (cancer), and immune system disorders. Each listing specifies the diagnostic criteria, severity thresholds, and functional limitations required for approval. A diagnosis alone is rarely sufficient. The medical record must show that the impairment meets or medically equals every criterion in the listing.
In addition to the standard Blue Book impairments, the SSA maintains a Compassionate Allowances list that expedites claims involving severe medical conditions where the diagnosis itself meets the standard for disability. Conditions currently on this list include certain aggressive cancers such as pancreatic cancer and acute leukemia, early-onset Alzheimer’s disease, ALS, and a number of rare genetic disorders. The Compassionate Allowances program is the closest the SSA comes to automatic qualification, but it applies to a narrow set of conditions and still requires supporting medical documentation.
“A diagnosis on the Blue Book is the starting point, not the conclusion. We frequently work with claimants whose conditions are on a listing but whose medical records do not document the specific findings the SSA needs to see. The difference between approval and denial often comes down to whether the treating physician’s notes capture the right details about severity and functional impact.” Tye Smith, Founding Partner at Pekas Smith
Applicants whose conditions do not meet a Blue Book listing may still qualify through a medical-vocational allowance, in which the SSA evaluates the combined effect of impairments on the claimant’s ability to perform past work or adjust to other work. This pathway accounts for a substantial share of approvals nationwide and is particularly relevant for older claimants and those with limited education or work history.
